Joe Biden and Vladimir Putin accept summit on Ukraine proposed by Emmanuel Macron

French President Emmanuel Macron proposed on Sunday to hold a meeting between the leaders Joe Bidenfrom the United States, and Vladimir Putinfrom Russia, and “with all the parties involved” in the crisis that could lead to a military conflict in Ukraine.

After Macron had a long telephone conversation with his Russian and Ukrainian counterparts, Volodymyr ZelenskyMoscow and Kiev advocated greater dialogue, although they exchanged accusations about the responsibility for the escalation of hostilities on the line that separates the Ukrainian territory from the areas controlled by the pro-Russian rebels.

Macron and Putin spoke for the second time on Sunday night, the French presidency announced.

Western countries led by the United States accuse Russia of stationing more than 150,000 troops on Ukraine’s border to launch an attack, and Washington routinely reiterates that the invasion could come “at any time.”

The French presidency described the talks this Sunday as one of “the last possible and necessary efforts to avoid a major conflict in Ukraine.”

These exchanges come amid rising hostilities in eastern Ukraine, where pro-Russian separatists who have risen up against Kiev are waging a conflict that has killed more than 14,000 people since 2014.

Secretary of State, Antony Blinken responded that US President Joe Biden is willing to “meet” with Putin “at any time, in any format if it helps prevent a war”.

During the first conversation with Macron, which lasted 1 hour and 45 minutes, Putin blamed “provocations” by the Ukrainian government for the escalation in fighting with separatists in the east of that country, according to the Kremlin.

Putin also called for NATO and the United States to “take Russia’s security demands seriously.”such as the withdrawal of its military infrastructure from Eastern Europe and a veto on Ukraine’s entry into the transatlantic alliance. (I)
