At least 152 people die and 165 are missing due to floods in southern Brazil

The accumulation of torrential waters due to the intense rains of recent days has caused a landslide in Petrópolis, in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Now, the search tasks have been reinforced with new crews of firefighters from other Brazilian states.

A landslide caused by the torrential water accumulation in the mountainous municipality of Petrópolis, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, has devastated large areas of the town and has already left at least 152 dead and 165 missing.

The Civil Police has released this Saturday a new list with the identification of part of the deceased, 16 more than on Friday’s count. The registry of missing persons, according to the Whereabouts Discovery Police Station, has dropped from 191 to 165 in the last update.

Search tasks have been reinforced with new fire department from other Brazilian states.

“It is exciting to see the mobilization of the other states in sending teams to Rio de Janeiro to help us with the searches in Petrópolis. Thank you very much to the governors,” said Claudio Castro, governor of Rio de Janeiro.

The authorities have already classified the rains as “the worst recorded in a century”and have expressed concern about the possibility of taking place new landslidesas the weather forecast predicts more rain this weekend.

Likewise, there is concern about the transmission of diseases, for which the Brazilian Department of Health has recommended that citizens who have had contact with the flood water or who have had skin injuries, to be aware of possible symptoms. .
