Donald Trump and two of his children must testify in an investigation into alleged fraudulent tax practices

Former President Donald Trump and two of his children, Ivanka and Donald Jr, will have to appear before the New York prosecutor’s office to testify in the framework of the investigation opened for alleged fraudulent tax practices of the Trump Organization family business group.

After more than two hours of hearing by videoconference held this Thursday morning, Judge Arthur Engoron agreed to “deny” the appeal filed by Trump and his two children who had so far ignored the subpoenas of the New York prosecutor, the Democrat Letitia James, to testify in the framework of the investigation that began in March 2019 into the family business group of the former president.

The judge has ordered Donald Trump to deliver the documents and information required by the prosecution within a period of “14 days” and orders the three to appear at the prosecutor’s office to testify within a period of “21 days”.

The Trumps are expected to appeal the decision.

“No one is above the law,” the New York prosecutor congratulated herself.

The former president and his family allege that it is a politically motivated investigation by the Democratic prosecutor.

Refraining from investigating “would have been a flagrant breach of the prosecutor’s duties,” the judge reasoned in his ruling, ruling out any “personal animosity” from James.

The prosecutor had summoned the Trumps to testify under oath in December, but they ignored the summons and resorted to all kinds of subterfuge to delay the investigation.

In a hundred-page document released in January, the New York prosecutor said she found “significant evidence suggesting that Donald J. Trump and the Trump Organization have falsely and fraudulently valued multiple assets.”

He accuses them of having “incorrectly estimated the value of these assets before financial institutions to obtain economic benefits.”

According to her, Donald Trump had “decision power over a wide range of practices at the Trump Organization, including misstatements to third parties, particularly financial institutions and the US Treasury.”

Eric, another of Trump’s sons and executive vice president of the Trump Organization, was questioned by James’ office about this case in October 2020.

If the prosecutor finds evidence of financial fraud, she will be able to sue the Trump Organization for damages but she will not be able to bring criminal charges.

James this week filed a document in which the accounting firm that worked for Donald Trump accuses him of not trusting the financial statements that his organization provided to him for a decade.

Mazars also informed the family group that he would stop working for him.

The latest developments prompted the House Oversight Committee to ask the administration’s general services on Thursday to terminate the contract that allows it to rent the Trump International Hotel in Washington and which it plans to sell.

For the former Republican president, who has not yet made public whether he will aspire to the presidency of the United States again, problems are piling up.

In addition to the congressional commission investigating the assault on January 6, 2021 and the role of Trump and members of his circle, in recent weeks, the tycoon has been accused of mishandling official documentation for deliberately neglecting some of your archives prior to mandatory transmission to the US National Archives.
