Nicaragua received this Sunday a new batch, of 3.2 million doses, of the Russian vaccine against covid-19 Sputnik Light, which will be applied to people between 18 and 29 years old.
Some 3.2 million vaccines were delivered to Nicaragua in the early morning hours at the Augusto C. Sandino International Airport, according to official information.
This is the second shipment of Sputnik Light that Nicaragua receives, after having acquired a batch with 192,000 doses on the 15th, to total 3.39 million servings of the Russian vaccine.
Spitnik Light is characterized because it consists of a single dose and, according to Moscow, is 70% effective against the delta variant of the coronavirus, whose presence in Nicaragua has not been confirmed by the authorities.
The Sputnik Light formula, pending approval by the World Health Organization (WHO), will be applied starting this Monday to people between 18 and 29 years old in 1,800 vaccination posts, according to the Nicaraguan Government.
Nicaragua has also applied the Sputnik V vaccine, also made in Russia, as part of its immunization strategy against covid-19.
As of this Monday, in addition, the application of the Cuban vaccines Abdala and Soberana 02 will begin to children from 2 years old and adolescents up to 17 years old, who, like those in Russia, do not have authorization from the WHO.
Other formulas used in Nicaragua are Covishield, AstraZeneca and Pfizer, mainly by donations from Spain, Norway, India, Panama and a loan from Honduras, as well as by the efforts of the Covax mechanism of the World Health Organization (WHO).
Initially, the Government of Nicaragua aimed to vaccinate 43.8% of the 6.5 million inhabitants, that is, 2.8 million Nicaraguans, but it could change its projections after recent acquisitions.
According to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Nicaragua is still not enough to vaccinate 10% of its population.
The Ministry of Health reported, last Tuesday, that the pandemic already leaves 207 dead and 16,044 confirmed cases of covid-19 since March 2020.
The independent medical network Observatorio Ciudadano Covid-19 has reported 5,887 deaths from pneumonia and other symptoms related to the pandemic, as well as 31,036 suspected cases. (I)
