France and its allies announce the start of their military withdrawal from Mali

They underline that the conditions are no longer met to continue their military commitment in the fight against jihadist terrorism due to the lack of cooperation from the military junta that governs Bamako.

France and its European partners involved in Mali, in addition to Canada, announced this Thursday a coordinated military withdrawal of that African country, where the French operation Barkhane and the European special forces Takuba are present.

A joint statement underlines that the political, operational and legal conditions are no longer met to continue their current military commitment in the fight against jihadist terrorism there given the lack of cooperation from the military junta that governs Bamako.

The group notes that, “in close cooperation with neighboring countries, they wish to continue to be present in the region”, where there are a total of about 25,000 soldiers.

Signatories include Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, the European Council, the European Commission, the Sahel Coalition and the African Union Commission.

“We cannot continue to be militarily committed to de facto authorities with whom we do not share the strategy. The fight against terrorism cannot justify everything,” French President Emmanuel Macron said today at a press conference.
