Charities working with people who have been sexually abused have stated surprise and concern over Prince Andrew’s offer of England to help victims of sex trafficking.
The Duke of York, son of Queen Elizabeth II, reached an out-of-court settlement this week with the woman who denounced him for alleged sexual abuseVirginia Giuffre, and agreed to pay a sum of money to the charity created by her to help victims.
The executive director of the National Association for Persons Abused in Childhood (Napac, for its acronym in English), Gabrielle Shaw, appreciated the help of the donors, but did not hide her uneasiness about the prince’s offer.
“There would be great concern about any support that Prince Andrew may offer to the entity, due to the ethical implications of accepting money or sponsorship from an individual who is suspected of being an aggressor and that he has had ties to a convicted felon,” Shaw added.
Meanwhile, the entity “Beyond the Street” (Beyond the street), which works to end sexual exploitation, reported that it is unlikely to receive any contribution that Andrés wants to offer, due to the “serious accusations” against the prince.
Labor MP Jess Phillips admitted to the media her doubts that the prince can have a constructive job when it comes to combat child sex trafficking.
“Those who work on (cases) of sexual violence or human trafficking services they will certainly not open their arms” to the duke, Phillips added to the BBC.
According to the media, the queen will help her son finance the agreement, the amount of which is unknown but some newspapers have placed it at 12 million pounds (14 million euros).
The Duke of York has always denied Giuffre’s accusations stating, in an interview with the BBC more than two years ago, that he could not remember if he had ever met her.
Last January, the queen withdrew from the prince his military titles and the entities he sponsored, but today the media question whether Andrew would also have to lose the Duchy of York. (I)
