NATO will be strengthened in Eastern Europe due to the conflict with Russia

NATO expects reinforce its military presence in Eastern Europe to respond to the Russian threatwhich has become “the new normal” on the continent, the secretary general of the transatlantic organization, Jens Stoltenberg, said on Wednesday.

“We have increased […] our presence in the east and we contemplate increasing it even more. Romania is ready to host a task force, France is ready to lead it, and several allies want to participate in this multinational force, but no final decision has been made”, Jens Stoltenberg specified after a meeting of NATO defense ministers in Brussels.

To ensure the defense of all allies, we are deploying additional ground forces in the eastern part of Alliance territory and additional sea and air assets […] and we have increased the level of preparation of our forces”, explained the ministers in a joint declaration adopted unanimously.

“The measures we take are and will continue to be preventive, proportionate and do not constitute an escalation. We are willing to further strengthen our defensive and dissuasive position to face any eventuality”, they added.

NATO notes “maintaining a massive invasion force [rusa] ready to attack” on the borders of Ukraine, stressed Jens Stoltenberg.

The person in charge denounced “the new normality for security” in Europe imposed by Russia, which consists of “contesting with the use of force the fundamental principles, especially the right of a sovereign country to choose its alliances and the right of allies to defend himself.”

“Moscow has concentrated forces to try to intimidate and make their demands accepted. We don’t know what’s going to happen, but Russia has shown in the past that she was willing to use force,” she stressed.

“We are not waiting for events to happen,” he insisted.

“The fact that Russia concentrates troops and threatens independent and allied countries is in itself very serious”, he warned. “This requires adjustments. [de las capacidades de defensa] in the longer term. But we have time to think about it, ”she specified. That will be one of the issues that will be discussed at the NATO summit in Madrid, on June 29 and 30.

“It is important that we send clear signals that the eastern flank is important to us and that we have a clear vision of what needs to be protected,” German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht had said upon arrival at the headquarters of the NATO.

“We should not do it in the current situation, but after a thorough examination,” he added. (I)
