Russia says its troops will return to normal in three to four weeks

The Russian ambassador to Ireland, Yury Filatov, described this Wednesday as “madness” the assumption that his country intends to invade Ukraine and assured that the Russian troops deployed on the border with that neighboring country will return to normality in “three or four weeks.” ”.

The diplomat made these statements to the Irish public broadcaster (RTE), in an interview in which he rejected that the military presence in the region is an “act of aggression” or serves as preparation for the invasion of Ukraine.

“We have no plans to invade anyone, much less Ukraine. We have no political, economic, military motives (…) If you knew something about the Ukrainian and Russian people, you would never have asked me that question,” he replied. Filatov in reference to Moscow’s intentions.

The ambassador acknowledged that he does not know how many of the 130,000 soldiers who have been deployed at various points on the border with Ukraine will be withdrawn, as Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on Tuesday.

“What I can say is that within three to four weeks, the configuration of the forces in the western region of Russia will return to their usual standard situation,” Filatov said.

The diplomat recalled that the Russian Army is carrying out military maneuvers in the region together with its ally Belarus and that these exercises will conclude on February 20: “They can be verified next week,” he added.

When asked about the locations where the troops will be withdrawn and the distance that will separate them from the Ukrainian border, Filatov was blunt.

“They will go exactly where they have to go. They will be on Russian territory. This is nobody’s business at all,” the ambassador settled. (I)
