Peru will reopen its land borders

The Peruvian government defended this Tuesday the reopening of the country’s land borders, after their closure in 2020 due to the covid-19 pandemic, due to the decrease in cases and deaths, and because they are the entry route for 39% of tourists in Peru. the national territory.

“The opening of land borders is transcendental to reintegrate us and has the support of regional and local governments and the business sector, as well as operators in the tourism sector, merchants and companies dedicated to foreign trade,” said the minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Roberto Sánchez.

This ministry “has the commitment to increase the tourist offer, which is diverse and safe”, in coordination with micro and small tourism companies, as well as “promote safe connectivity for foreign and Peruvian tourists, thus contributing to the reactivation economy,” Sánchez added in reference to the supreme decree published to reopen the borders.

Until 2019, 39.4% of the entry of tourists to the country was made through land borders, most of these visitors did so through the Migration Control Office of the Santa Rosa de Tacna Border Complex (21.7%), bordering with Chile, followed by the Tumbes Binational Border Attention Center (7.5%), on the border with Ecuador.

Currently, the vaccination process with the full dose has reached 89% of the adult population of Tumbes and 80% in Tacna, according to information reported by the regional health directorates of each region, the ministry reported.

However, Tumbes continues to be one of the regions of the country in which the curve of cases is still growing, unlike a large part of Peru where the trend is downward, after the third wave expanded since last December.

Sánchez pointed out that the Foreign Ministry coordinates with its peers in the region to find out the dates for opening the land border and activate the processes to provide services at access points to Peruvians and visitors.

According to the latest official report, Peru had 1,306 confirmed cases in the last 24 hours and 44 deaths, while 3,586 patients are hospitalized.

The pandemic has generated 3,449,712 cases and 208,466 deaths in Peru to date. (I)
