Russian troop withdrawal a positive sign if confirmed, says France

France considers that the withdrawal of Russian troops from the border with Ukraine is a positive sign that, if confirmed, would justify the efforts of French President Emmanuel Macron to resume dialogue with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

This was the first reaction to Moscow’s announcement of a withdrawal of part of its military from the Ukrainian border by the spokesman for the French Government, Gabriel Attal, who at a press conference at the end of the Council of Ministers explained that it is confirming the reality of that information.

“If it is confirmed, it is obviously a good thing, it is a positive sign, a sign of de-escalation that we have been asking for weeks” and that “it would confirm that we were right to resume dialogue,” Attal said, referring to Macron’s trip last week to Moscow to meet with Putin.

The spokesman insisted on being cautious because, although the Russian announcement “if it is confirmed, it goes in the right direction, it is a stage.” He pointed out that in the same way that in the past they did not overreact to dramatize the situation, now they will not do it to overcongratulate themselves.

“We are going to continue in our line, which is that of rigor, and above all that of dialogue,” he added before anticipating that Macron will soon speak again with German Foreign Minister Olaf Scholz, who is meeting with Putin in Moscow on Tuesday.

The French president will also speak with other heads of state whose names Attal did not want to give, who only specified that he had canceled a speech he had this afternoon in Paris to have a clear agenda. (I)
