The possibility that the pandemic is under control this 2022 is still there, but the world “you run an increasing risk of wasting it”. This has been warned by who this Monday.
Its general director, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has expressed this in a message for the Global Action Meeting against COVID-19, where he has warned that the high number of mild cases in countries with high vaccination rates “is driving the false narrative that the pandemic is over“.
This -he pointed out-, combined with the very different situations that occur in those countries where the levels of vaccination and testing are still low, “creates the ideal conditions for new variants to emerge of the coronavirus”.
In this regard, Tedros recalled that 116 countries are at risk of not reaching the global goal of 70% of humanity having been vaccinated against COVID-19 by the middle of the year, the goal that experts believe is necessary to achieve herd immunity. “We urgently need support for political leaders to accelerate the distribution of vaccines,” urged the head of the organization.
Likewise, it has reiterated its call for the international community, especially developed economies, to donate 16,000 million dollars this year for the ACT Accelerator, the program with which the WHO and other agencies finance the distribution of vaccines, treatments, tests and other tools against the pandemic.
In addition, it has requested support for models such as the technology transfer center created in South Africa, with which it is sought that developing countries also achieve vaccines based on the new messenger RNA technology, which has been shown to be very effective against the coronavirus.
