Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky invited his American counterpart Joe Biden to visit Kiev “in the coming days” on Sunday to express Washington’s support in the face of the risk of a Russian invasion.
“I am convinced that his visit to Kiev in the coming days … would be a powerful signal and help stabilize the situation,” Zelensky told Biden in a phone call on Sunday, the Ukrainian presidency quoted him as saying.
Washington did not mention any invitation after commenting on the 50-minute call with Zelensky.
“Biden reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine,” the White House said.
“Both leaders agreed on the importance of continuing diplomacy and deterrence in response to the Russian military buildup on Ukraine’s borders,” it added.
More than 100,000 Russian soldiers are concentrated on the Ukrainian border.
Zelensky’s office said the two had discussed possible economic sanctions on Russia if it decided to invade its neighbor.
“We are not yet a member of NATO. For this reason, only a strong Ukrainian army can guarantee the security of our state,” Zelensky added after thanking Biden for the constant shipments of US military support.
