This Sunday the German chancellor, Olaf Scholz, indicated that he will travel to Kiev (Ukraine) tomorrow and to Moscow (Russia) on Tuesday to “take the opportunity to speak” to guarantee peace, but warned that an invasion of Ukraine by Russia will have “heavy penalties”.
“I am going to Ukraine tomorrow and I am talking with President (Volodymyr) Zelensky. Passed to Moscow and talk with President (Vladimir) Putin. In both cases it is about seeing how we can guarantee peace in Europe”, he declared in Berlin after the act of re-election of the German president, Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
He added before his tour that “we now understand that there is a very, very serious threat to peace in Europe.”
“That is why it is necessary to be clear and to say clearly that a military aggression against Ukraine that endangers its territorial integrity and sovereignty would entail harsh reactions and sanctions that we have carefully prepared with our allies in Europe and in NATO, and that we can make effective immediately. Scholz warned.
“At the same time it’s about seizing the opportunity to speak. There is already between the United States and Russia, and that’s fine. There are talks in the framework of the NATO-Russia format. There are talks within the framework of the OSCE and in the so-called Normandy Format”, added the German chancellor.
He recalled that in this last framework “Ukraine, Russia, France and Germany have the joint task of seeking a way out of the crisis. That is what will be at the core of what we will talk about.”
The German chancellor, criticized in recent weeks inside and outside his country for an attitude considered lukewarm in relation to Moscow, declared that “Ukraine can be sure that we show the necessary solidarity, as in the past”.
“Compared to all other countries, Germany is the one that has brought the most financial aid for the stabilization of Ukraine. We will continue to do so and lend our contribution at the same time so that this double strategy continues”, said Scholz.
He referred to the fact that this consists of “clear statements about what will happen in the event of military aggression, while at the same time using all possible means to ensure that there is a peaceful development of the crisis and that Russia reduces the escalation of the situation” .
“There is great clarity between all those who are allies in NATO and the European Union. One thing that is important, among all the rest, is that the bilateral conversations that we have are like the declarations that we make when we make joint decisions in big conferences”, defended Scholz. (I)
