The Bolivian authorities received this Saturday more than one million Pfizer vaccines against COVID-19 donated by the United States through the United Nations Covax mechanism that will be destined to the immunization of adolescents aged 16 and 17 years.
A total of 1’000.350 drugs were received in a ceremony attended by the Bolivian Minister of Health, Jeyson Auza; the Vice Minister of Foreign Trade, Benjamín Blanco; the Charge d’Affaires of the United States Embassy in La Paz, Charisse Phillips, and representatives of United Nations organizations.
Auza recalled that 188,370 doses of Pfizer arrived at the end of September with which a few days ago the vaccination of adolescents aged 16 and 17 years could be started, with the prior consent of their parents or guardians.
“Today (Saturday) we are receiving the rest of the vaccines, making a total of 1’188,720 vaccinations,” the Bolivian authority detailed and stressed that this donation guarantees the coverage of first and second doses for the target population, which are adolescents.
The minister remarked that vaccination against COVID has ceased to be a “privilege” in the country to become a right, but it can also be affirmed “that it constitutes an obligation, because a vaccinated person is one less patient in intensive care ”.
Blanco thanked the United States for its support and appreciated the work of the United Nations so that vaccines reach “all the countries of the world.”
In turn, Phillips highlighted the decision of the Government of Luis Arce to use the drugs to vaccinate adolescents “so that they can return to school safely.”
“I am especially proud of the delivery of vaccines today because as a mother I understand how difficult the pandemic has been for Bolivian families,” said the diplomat.
He also indicated that the objective of the Joe Biden government is “to save lives and end the pandemic, accelerate economic reactivation and support the Bolivian people to return to normal life.”
