Anti-Hindu attacks spark protests in Bangladesh

The violence began after the dissemination of a video on social networks in which a copy of the Koran was seen placed on the lap of a Hindu god.

Tens of thousands of people belonging to religious minorities demonstrated in various cities in Bangladesh on Saturday to protest against a series of deadly attacks on Hindu temples and other places of worship.

The demonstrations took place in more than 60 towns in this country, whose majority of the population is of Muslim faith.

Protesters expressed outrage after last week’s anti-Hindu riots, in which seven people were killed.

“The security forces and the administration completely failed in their mission to protect minorities, especially Hindus,” lamented Rana Dasgupta, leader of the Hindu, Buddhist and Christian Unity Council, which organized the protests, present in the capital. Dhaka.

The most important demonstration took place in Chittagong, the second largest city in the country, with at least 15,000 participants.

The spiral of violence against Hindus began after the broadcast of a video in which a copy of the Koran was seen placed on the lap of a Hindu god during the Durga Puja festival.

The 17 million believers in Hinduism represent 10% of the population of Bangladesh.

Police indicated that they arrested 500 suspects for their alleged involvement in the attacks, one of them is a Muslim suspected of having placed the controversial Quran on the lap of a Hindu god. (I)
