The drama of Afghan girls: sold by their parents to other men to pay bills

In the video that accompanies these lines, images of desolation are seen: a girl of only seven months cries. Her father has sold her to be able to pay medical bills. It is not the only one, as more girls are also about to be sold in Bagdhis, in northwestern Afghanistan.

It is the reality of many small in the most disadvantaged areas of a country that almost half a year ago was taken over by the Taliban. With the regime change, Afghanistan entered a situation of humanitarian catastrophe. “When a family cannot eat, sometimes the decisions are terrible,” denounces Blanca Carazo, head of UNICEF Spain Programs.

This is the case of Hajira, who is five years old. She was sold for around 6,000 euros to marry her off to a man who has now canceled the deal after an earthquake injured the young woman. With his broken leg, he was no longer worth the same. “I sold it before he got injured. Now he doesn’t give me anything.” Afghanistan is now a forgotten country where they sell their daughters to survive.
