Spain donates 22 million Covid-19 vaccines to Ibero-America and the Caribbean

Spain has donated 50 million vaccines through the multilateral mechanism Covaxof which 22 million (44%) correspond to Latin America and the Caribbean, reported this Saturday the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation.

In addition, 16 million were delivered to sub-Saharan Africa and a further 7.5 million to the Southern Neighborhood (several North African and Middle Eastern countries).

Spain has reached this amount one year after the approval by the Government of the Plan for Universal Access to Solidarity Vaccination.

Covax is a public-private alliance to guarantee equitable access to vaccines, of which 190 countries are part.

With these donations, Spain shows its “commitment” to this system and is among the top five countries in the world in vaccine donations, and second in the case of Latin America, according to Foreign Affairs.

In recent days, donations to various nations have accelerated. This Friday, in line with Spain’s health cooperation with Latin America, a new batch of more than one million vaccines donated by Spain through Covax was delivered to Colombia.

The delivery was made in the presence of the Spanish head of International Cooperation, Pilar Cancela Rodríguez, and the President of the Republic of Colombia, Iván Duque, and in the coming weeks 6.5 million more doses will be delivered from Pfizer. Spain becomes the first donor in this South American country.

In addition, last Saturday, January 29, 244,800 and 381,600 Johnson & Johnson pods were delivered in two EU Team Europe operations to Mauritania and Syria, respectively.

In the case of Mauritania, it is the fifth donation to a strategic country for Spain; Syria is another of the nations with which the Spanish Government has a “commitment”, given the “serious humanitarian situation” it is suffering.

Finally, on Monday, January 31, 302,400 doses were delivered to Senegal, a country that is also a priority for Spanish Cooperation, and new deliveries will be made in the coming weeks.
