The President of the United States, Joe Biden, assured this Thursday (02.03.2022) that the leader of the Islamic State (IS) group, Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi, died in the explosion of a bomb that he himself carried, during a US operation in northern Syria.
In a speech at the White House after confirming through a statement that a US operation had killed al-Qurayshithe president assured that his government did everything possible to “minimize the deaths of civilians.”
Al-Qurayshi not only detonated a suicide vest to kill himself, but also blew up the entire “third floor” of the residence in the city of AtmeBiden added, “taking several members of his family with him,” he noted.
In the house there were “families, including children,” he said. “When our troops moved in to capture the terrorist, in a final act of desperate cowardice, without regard for the lives of his own family or others in the building, he chose to blow himself up (…) rather than face justice for the crimes he has committed.”
According to the so-called White Helmets, a rescue group operating in opposition-controlled areas of Syria, the operation left 13 dead, including six children.
However, he hinted that all the civilian casualties were due to al-Qurayshi’s actions, saying the operation has “sent a clear message to terrorists around the world.” (I)
