A large oil platform explodes and puts lives and the environment at risk in Nigeria

This Thursday it was confirmed that an oil platform ship with the capacity to store 2 million barrels of crude oil belonging to the Nigerian company Shebah Exploration and Production Company (SEPCOL), located on the coast of the country, exploded early on Wednesday leaving at least 10 missing.

“The cause of the explosion is being investigated (…) At this time, no deaths have yet been reported but we can confirm that there were 10 crew members on board the ship before the incident,” the company said in a statement collected today by the media. local.

The explosion occurred early on Wednesday and unleashed flames on this platform ship, called Trinity Spirit, which was located at the Ukpokiti oil terminal in the Niger Delta.

With a processing capacity of 22,000 barrels per day and storage of 2 million, according to the information provided on the SEPCOL web portal, the Trinity Spirit is an FPSO (Floating Production, Storage and Offloading) type vessel.

FPSOs are gigantic platform ships essential for exploiting oil in deep and very deep waters, which can be connected to submarine wells and temporarily store their production until it is transferred to cargo ships.

SEPCOL is now under receivership, a court-appointed tool to help companies in crisis avoid bankruptcy.

In videos shared on social networks, a huge black smoke and large flames can be seen rising from the partially sunken platform in the sea.

The oil sector in Nigeria – which is the largest producer of crude oil on the African continent – has been the target of harsh criticism from communities, who have denounced great losses and environmental damage caused by its activities for years, specifically, in the South of the country. (I)
