At least 15 people die in an explosion at a gunpowder factory in Russia

The investigation, classified as “especially important” is evaluating various versions of the causes of the explosion.

At least 15 people have died in an explosion on Friday at a gunpowder factory in Ryazan, in western Russia, according to the Investigative Committee of the Russian region.

“According to the investigation, today October 22 (…) a fire broke out in a plant of the Razryad company, as a result of which, according to preliminary data, there were 17 victims, 15 of them died,” the statement from the institution.

“One person was hospitalized and the fate of another person is unknown,” the committee adds.

The fire has been extinguished, but the factory has been completely destroyed.

A group of experts has traveled to the site to, among other things, verify compliance with the factory’s industrial safety level as regards the handling of hazardous materials production.

The investigation, classified as “especially important” is evaluating various versions of the causes of the explosion.

The Emergency Ministry has initially attributed the explosion to a technical failure, according to the Interfax agency.

However, in an inspection in June a series of violations of the regulations were detected at the plant, such as the storage of explosive materials or the correct disposal of powder remains on the ground, among others, indicates the TASS agency. (I)
