WHO considers it premature to declare a victory against COVID-19

The director of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, considered this Tuesday “premature” to declare a victory against COVID-19 and abandon the effort to stop the transmission of the virus.

“It is premature for any country to capitulate or declare itself victorious”, said the person in charge at a press conference, concerned about the increase in the number of deaths in most regions of the planet.

His call for caution comes at a time when some countries are seeking to return to normalcy. For example, Denmark lifted restrictions on Tuesday, despite registering a record number of cases of COVID-19, estimating that the wide coverage of the vaccines and the lower severity of the condition produced by the omicron variant allow it.

“More transmission means more deaths”, the doctor stated.

Since the omicron variant was first detected ten weeks ago, the who has received the report of 90 million cases.

“We are concerned about the fact that a story has been installed in certain countries that thanks to vaccines and due to the high contagiousness of omicron and its less seriousness, it is not possible to prevent contagion”said the head of the WHO.

“This couldn’t be further from the truth,” said Dr. Tedros, stressing the virus is “dangerous,” a message that repeats since this variant appeared.

“We are not asking countries to reinstate lockdowns, but we are calling on them to protect their population using all available means and not just vaccines,” indicated the high office of the who.

He also pointed out that the virus will continue to evolve, so he called on the countries to continue testing, monitoring and sequencing.

“We can’t fight this virus if we don’t know what it’s doing,” the doctor stated.

The director of the who He also estimated that if the virus continues to evolve, “perhaps vaccines will also need to evolve”.
