Costa Rica authorizes a private company to distribute vaccines against COVID-19

Ministry clarified that it will not have to do with import times or the prices that the company will charge people for the doses.

The Government of Costa Rica authorized this Monday the company Farmanova SA as the first private distributor in the country of vaccines against covid-19 manufactured by the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca.

The Ministry of Health explained that the authorization is effective immediately and clarified that it will not have to do with import times or the prices that the company will charge people for the doses.

“The legal representative of the pharmaceutical company and the authorized drugstores are instructed to ensure that the vaccine is distributed with the approved labeling and that adequate storage and cold chain are maintained until they are delivered to the vaccination sites,” the resolution indicates. of the Ministry of Health.

In addition, the private distributor will have the obligation to inform the National Pharmacovigilance Center of any event supposedly attributable to vaccination and immunization and to keep a record of all vaccine placements through the state system that controls vaccination.

With data updated to January 24, in Costa Rica, a country of 5.1 million inhabitants, 8.2 million doses of the vaccine against covid-19 have been placed.

The percentage of coverage with the first dose in the population subject to vaccination (over 5 years of age) reaches 84% ​​and with second doses 76.1%.

Costa Rica began vaccinating children between 5 and 11 years of age on January 10, and this process is expected to continue throughout the first half of the year. The percentage of first doses in this population is barely 7.8%.

As of January 28, the latest data available, Costa Rica had 682,480 cases of covid-19 and 7,533 deaths. (I)
