Minor is vaccinated after controversy over invasion of anti-vaccine group in hospital in Costa Rica

The anti-vaccine movement has carried out several protests on public roads in Costa Rica and on one occasion they tried to force their way into the Ministry of Health.

Costa Rican authorities reported this Saturday that vthey cradled against covid-19 a child who was admitted to a hospital of the city of Heredia, a medical center where last Thursday a group of people entered by force to try to prevent the procedure.

“This Friday, January 28, authorities from the Ministry of Health and the National Children’s Board (PANI) empowered the San Vicente de Paúl hospital, in Heredia, to proceed with the vaccination against covid-19 of the hospitalized minor whose parents refused”, indicated this Saturday the Costa Rican Social Security Fund in a statement.

The entity reported that after receiving the endorsement of the Ministry of Health and the PANI, the minor was vaccinated and he was then handed over to his parents. The second dose will be applied within 21 days.

According to the authorities, the child was hospitalized due to a respiratory pathology, so given the risk factors and the current epidemiological context, the treating doctor indicated the placement of the covid-19 vaccine.

In Costa Rica, the Government decreed as the covid-19 vaccine is mandatory for minors, health personnel and teachers.

The doctors requested the intervention of the social work service and the PANI before the refusal of the parents to vaccinate the child.
