Ultra-conservative European leaders meeting this Saturday at the Madrid Summit signed a declaration in which they advocate “cooperation” in defense against military threats such as that of Russia about Ukraine, which have led to Europe “on the verge of war”.
The event, organized by the far-right Spanish party Vox, brought together the prime ministers of Hungary, Viktor Orbán, and Poland, Mateusz Morawiecki, and the French ultra-conservative leader Marine Le Pen, among others, in the Spanish capital.
In addition to party officials such as Marlene Svazek (Austria), Tom Van Grieken (Belgium), Krasimir Karakachanov (Bulgaria), Martin Helme (Estonia), Vincenzo Sofo and Paolo Borchia (Italy), Valdemar Tomasevski (Lithuania), Rob Roos ( Netherlands) and Aurelian Pavelescu (Romania).
The signatories of the declaration, which was reached after an intense debate on the future of the European Union (EU), consider it necessary to “work to guarantee that the nations of Europe act in solidarity in the face of the threat of external aggression”.
In addition to warning of an “ineffectiveness of diplomacy” of the EU and, in this sense, demanding that each nation have a “strong and supportive voice” to preserve “peace, territorial integrity and the inviolability of borders”.
The ultra-conservative political formations, which met for the first time in Warsaw in December 2021, reiterated their concern about the “internal and external attacks” that the EU receives.
“The European Community was forged as a space of free cooperation between sovereign spaces. However, there is a growing threat that tries to transform the union into an ideologized mega-state”, he adds.
For these parties, the EU can be transformed into a corporation that “disregards national identity and sovereignty” and, therefore, democracy, plurality and the interests of the citizens of the nations that comprise it.
For his part, the Hungarian Prime Minister advocated “peace, de-escalation and negotiation” in the face of the Ukrainian crisis, but rejected that the solution to the conflict ends up being a strategic agreement between Russia and the United States on European security without the involvement of the Europeans.
“We have to mobilize our energies to slow down the process, negotiate and find a way to peace,” said the Hungarian Prime Minister, who is scheduled to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday.
In this context, the Polish Prime Minister again accused Russia of threatening the integrity of Ukraine and assured that those present at the meeting defend the need to treat the sovereignty of each country as a value.
“I hope that the voice of our group will be heard in the Kremlin as well,” he said.
