“It is a protest against the government and its anti-popular policy,” said the general secretary of one of the organizations that called this march.
Thousands of people protested this Wednesday in Panama City against corruption, the cost of living and social inequality in a march called by unions, which passed without incident.
The protesters carried signs with slogans such as “enough already” or “I want a country without corrupt politicians.”
“It is a protest against the government and its anti-popular policy,” Saúl Méndez, general secretary of the Suntracs construction union, one of the organizations that called the protest, told AFP.
“(We are) tired of the levels of inequality in a country that has economic development, that has economic growth, yet it continues to be one of the countries with the worst distribution of wealth,” Erasmo Serrut told AFP.
The protest ended on the premises of the Panamanian Presidency, where the protesters delivered a list of requests to the government, such as an increase in salaries and freezing of the prices of the basic food basket. In addition, they rejected a reform of the electoral code recently approved by the deputies.
“Taxes were created for hospitals, schools, roads, everything that is a reference for the good of us and all that is wrong here in Panama. We have to wake up, we have to leave because if not in 2024 (next elections) we will not have a country, “Erica Wilson told AFP. (I)
