Boris Johnson reaffirms his intention not to resign over the Downing Street party scandal

In the midst of a scandal over parties held in downing street during the pandemic, Boris Johnson has reaffirmed his intention not to resign, after what Scotland Yard announced this Tuesday the opening of an investigation in this regard.

This Wednesday, the British prime minister has insisted that he will not resign during the control session in the House of Commons, where the ‘Partygate‘ has once again monopolized the debate. The ‘premier’, however, have tried to dodge the questions related to this issue, defending that the Government “is right” and insisting that there is already a police investigation in this regard.

Labor Party leader Keir Starmer has been particularly harsh on Johnson, saying the fact that he is the subject of a police investigation is “shameful“. The leader of the opposition has once again called for his immediate resignation and has accused him of “provoking immense damage to the confidence of the population in the Government” by trying to save his own career.

Johnson, however, has tried to avoid the issue and has stated that, in the event that the investigations point to him as guilty, he will resign. “I think the prime minister has said yes, that he agrees that the code applies to him as well, so if he cheats Parliament, he will have to resign“, Starmer pointed out. The Prime Minister, for his part, has defended that Downing Street is focused on managing the pandemic and the health system, arguing that it is the ‘Tories’ who can handle these issues and not Labor.

Meanwhile, the expected report written by Sue Gray It could be published soon and call Johnson’s words into question, so Starmer has asked the ‘premier’ to commit to publishing it in full.

Johnson, however, has hidden behind the increased tension between Russia and Ukraine during the parliamentary session and took the opportunity to reproach Starmer for ignoring the fact that “we have a crisis on the borders with Ukraine”.

The last of the long list of alleged parties held at the prime minister’s official residence during the worst moments of the pandemic in the United Kingdom came to light this Monday: an alleged “surprise” birthday party for Johnson himself in full lockdown.
