Prosur countries will examine their achievements and commitments in Cartagena de Indias

The Forum for the Progress and Integration of South America (Prosur) will hold this Thursday in Cartagena de Indias its III Presidential Summit, in which the member countries will discuss issues of health, energy, infrastructure, environment, security and defense.

Prosur, which was created in March 2019, is a space for dialogue and cooperation to advance towards a more effective integration, of which Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay and Peru.

“During 2021, we worked in a coordinated manner with the countries participating in the forum to promote more than 60 topics in the sectoral agendas of health, infrastructure, energy, security and defense, environment, disaster risk management and in sustainable energy planning,” Colombian Vice President and Foreign Minister Marta Lucía Ramírez told Efe.

Colombia has held Prosur’s pro tempore presidency for a year, a period that, according to the chancellor, “translates into more and better benefits achieved for 386 million citizens of the region, thanks to the joint work of the entities of all the countries that comprise it”.

The summit is expected to be attended by the presidents of Colombia, Iván Duque; from Chile, Sebastián Piñera; from Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, and from Peru, Pedro Castillo, as well as the vice president of Brazil, Hamilton Mourao, and ministers from the other member countries.

Piñera, who will finish his second term on March 11, invited his successor, the president-elect Gabriel Boric, but he declined to attend considering that this forum, created by leaders of the right, will not be a priority of his Government.

Prosur was promoted to replace the Union of South American Nations (Unasur), a group in which only four countries remain: Bolivia, Venezuela, Guyana and Suriname.

Paraguayan President Mario Abdo Benítez, who was expected in Cartagena de Indias where his country will receive Prosur’s pro tempore presidency, today canceled his attendance because tested positive for covid-19 again.

In the case of Brazil, the president Jair Bolsonaro He had also confirmed his participation, but on Monday he canceled his attendance without giving explanations, and delegated the representation to his vice president Mourao.

Management Balance

In Cartagena de Indias, Colombia’s main tourist destination, the Colombian Vice President and Foreign Minister will present the management report of her presidency for the time.

According to Ramírez, “an example of this joint effort is the Immunization Capacity Scaling project that prepares us as a Prosur community for a possible new health crisis.”

Prosur is a recent mechanism, began its work shortly before the covid-19 pandemic and thanks to its flexibility it was possible to design joint strategies to respond to that priority”, said the chancellor.

Ramírez added that, in this way, “instances were created for the issues of immunization and epidemiology and the creation of a network of epidemiological observatories that has the support of the Pan American Health Organization (OPS)”.

The Prosur Summit in Cartagena follows that of the Pacific Alliance, which is holding its XVI Presidential Summit this Wednesday in Bahía Málaga, a naval base near Buenaventura, in the Colombian Pacific.
