Suspect in the death of British MP is charged with murder and terrorism

Conservative MP David Amess was stabbed. The suspect is Ali Harbi Ali, 25, of Somali origin.

The suspect arrested on Friday after the death of the British Conservative MP David Amess, stabbed during a meeting with voters, was charged with murder and planning terrorist acts, police and prosecutors reported Thursday.

Ali Harbi Ali, a 25-year-old Briton of Somali origin, is due to appear before a London judge on Thursday, Scotland Yard reported, noting that they are not looking for anyone else in connection with this attack.

“We will defend in court that this murder has a terrorist connection, that is, that it had both religious and ideological motivations”said Nick Price, head of the prosecution’s antiterrorist division.

Ali “was also accused of preparing for terrorist acts after reviewing the evidence gathered by the Metropolitan Police in their investigation,” he added.

The police had previously mentioned “a motivation potentially linked to Islamic extremism.”

Amess, a 69-year-old Conservative MP and father of five, was stabbed on Friday while meeting with constituents at a Methodist church in Leigh-on-Sea, about 60 kilometers east of London.

The young man, who according to the British media had followed a program against radicalization, was arrested at the scene.

The attack shocked the United Kingdom, still marked by the assassination of pro-European Labor MP Jo Cox in June 2016 by a far right one week before the referendum on Brexit. (I)
