Brazil will give temporary visa to digital nomads

The initiative seeks to facilitate the stay in Brazil for foreigners who have employment contracts for companies from other countries.

The Brazilian government announced this Monday that it will grant a temporary visa and authorization to reside in the country to the so-called “digital nomads”, as people who settle in one country but work remotely for companies in another nation are known.

The measure that regulates the granting of this type of visa was published this Monday by the National Immigration Council, linked to the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, this portfolio reported in a statement.

The initiative seeks to facilitate the stay in Brazil for foreigners who have work contracts for companies from other countries and can carry out their activities remotely, but who want to do so from Brazilian territory for any reason, be it tourism or even sentimental.

The beneficiary cannot have any type of contract or employment relationship with companies in Brazil and must demonstrate that, through information technologies such as the Internet, he can remotely carry out his work activities for the foreign company for which he works, according to the resolution. of the National Immigration Council.

The measure published in the Official Gazette establishes that foreigners interested in this type of visa may obtain residence for an initial period of one year, which can be renewed for the same period subsequently.

The National Secretary of Justice of the Ministry of Justice, José Vicente Santini, explained that the measure seeks to address a global employment trend and at the same time contributes to tourism and income to Brazil.

“The remuneration of digital nomads comes from abroad and the resources brought by these immigrants move the national economy,” said Santini, who is also president of the National Immigration Council.

“This is an important step for Brazil to promote one of the most modern work models,” added the official, referring to jobs that can be performed remotely from anywhere in the world.

To prove their status as a digital nomad, the immigrant needs to prove their ability to work remotely for a company based abroad, present the respective employment contract and have a monthly income equal to or greater than 1,500 dollars or a bank reserve of at least $18,000, according to the published resolution.
