Journalist Lourdes Maldonado is shot dead in Mexico: she is the third informant killed there this month

The Mexican journalist Lourdes Maldonado was shot to death this Sunday outside her home in Tijuana. With her, There are already three murdered journalists so far this year in the American country, where informants denounce the risk they face in exercising their profession.

Maldonado feared for his life and three years ago he informed President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who publicly asked for help at a press conference: “I also come here to ask for support, help and labor justice, because I even fear for life“, he stated then.

This Monday, the Mexican president has lamented his death and has promised an investigation. “What happened in Tijuana hurts a lot, we will carry out all the investigation“, he stated.

The protection program for journalists did not work which Maldonado entered in 2019 after a dispute with the former governor of Baja California. Last Thursday, she finally won the trial, but three days after that long-awaited victory, she was murdered.

His case is not unique: the photojournalist margarito martinez was also assassinated in Tijuana just a week ago and, a few days before, the director of ‘Inforegio’, Jose Luis Gamboa-Arenas, was assassinated in Veracruz. Thus, Mexico counts three journalists murdered in just over 20 days and 150 in the last decade.
