Alexei Navalni was poisoned in the summer of 2020 and, after recovering in a German hospital, was imprisoned in Russia, where he leads the opposition to Vladimir Putin.
The European Parliament has granted this Wednesday to the Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Conscience that the institution delivers each year in recognition of the fight for Human Rights.
The European Parliament has highlighted Navalni’s “great courage” in reestablishing the freedom of choice of the Russians and their years of work in favor of Human Rights and freedoms. “This has cost him his freedom and almost his life,” said the vice president of the European Parliament Heidi Hautala, who has demanded his immediate release on behalf of the chamber.
Poisoned in the summer of 2020, treated for months in a German hospital and imprisoned on his return to Russia, Navalni is the main opponent of Russian President Vladimir Putin, that he has persecuted his circle of collaborators and outlawed his foundations.
“All harassment, intimidation and attacks against the opposition, civil society and the media by the Russian authorities must stop,” stressed Hautala, while announcing that the collective of Afghan women, finalists of the award, will have a thematic week in the Eurocamara dedicated to publicizing their cause.
In the final phase, Navalni has received the support of popular and liberals, surpassing the group of afghan women, backed by socialists and greens, and the former Bolivian president Jeanine Áñez, at the proposal of the conservatives.
The award ceremony will take place on December 15, during the plenary session in Strasbourg (France), at which time the winners receive the award and go to the European Parliament.
In the case of Navalni, prisoner since last February, it is most likely that his wife will collect the award, according to parliamentary sources to Europa Press.
