The elected president of Chile has appointed this Friday his new cabinet, made up of a female majority and with the inclusion of several traditional center-left parties.
The elected president of Chile, Gabriel Boric, has appointed this Friday a cabinet with a majority of women, with the independent doctor Izkia Siches (Interior and Public Security) and the communist deputy Camila Vallejo (spokesperson) as the strongest female figures.
Of the 24 portfolios, 14 will be occupied by women.
In addition, it is the first time in the history of Chile that a woman will be in charge of the Interior and Public Security, the ministry that has the most political weight, in charge of public order and articulating the rest of the cabinet.
Another of the great novelties is the inclusion in the Political Committee of the Ministry of women, a nod to the feminist collectives, crucial in Boric’s victory.
“Today a new chapter begins to be written in our democratic history. We are not starting from scratch, we know that there is a story that elevates and inspires us,” said the former student leader, who at 36 will become the next March 11 youngest president of Chile.
With the economist and current president of the Central Bank Mario Marcel appointed to the Treasury, “we take on the challenge of consolidating the recovery of our economy without reproducing its structural inequalities with enormous energy.” Boric has spoken of a “sustainable growth, accompanied by a fair redistribution of wealth“.
Also, with a view to having governability, the future president has included traditional center-left parties in his cabinet that did not support him in the first round, such as the Socialist Party (PS), the Party for Democracy (PPD), the Liberal Party and the Radical Party (PR).
“We are joined in this team by ministers of diverse origins and formations, a diverse cabinet as diverse as our country is,” Boric concluded.
