Two genetically modified pig kidneys successfully transplanted into a brain-dead human

This is the third xenotransplantation known in recent months, after the recent “historic” surgery with a pig’s heart and the transplant of a single kidney that was carried out last September.

A team of American researchers has successfully transplant two pig kidneys genetically modified human who was brain dead.

Those in charge of this xenotransplantation in the clinical trial phase are researchers from the Heersink School of Medicine, of the University of Alabama in Birmingham (USA).

The possibility of transplanting organs from animals to people has been investigated since the 1990s and now is when the first successes are beginning to be glimpsed. Its about third known xenotransplantation in recent months, and the experiment was maintained for 74 hours.

Also last January 11 managed to transplant a pig heart genetically modified a 57-year-old man, in a surgery that he described as “historic”. The transplant of a pig’s heart “was the only option available to the patient”, since several hospitals had ruled out the possibility of performing a conventional transplant.

On the other hand, last September 2021 a precedent was set regarding the pig-to-human kidney transplants. On that occasion, the surgery was performed with a single kidney.

This is the first time the transplant of two pig kidneys into the abdomen of a human has been reported and the first time the surgery has been described in a scientific publication. According to those responsible, it is one more step towards “a future in which the supply of organs satisfies the tremendous need.”
