Man will face trial for throwing a cat from a building in Costa Rica

The case dates back to November 2019; the cat was thrown from a height of about 28 meters and died.

A man with the surname Saborío will face trial in Costa Rica charged with the crime of animal cruelty and death because he would have thrown a cat from the sixth floor of a building, sources in the process reported on Wednesday.

In the preliminary hearing held this Wednesday, a court in San José determined that the case should go to trial on a date to be defined, a process in which the suspect is exposed to a maximum sentence of two years in prison, according to the Law against Animal Abuse in force since 2017.

The Canine Federation of Costa Rica, which filed the criminal action against the suspect, expressed its satisfaction with the decision to carry out a trial and its confidence that the person responsible will be punished.

The case dates back to November 2019 when Saborío, 30, apparently threw a cat from the sixth floor of an apartment building in Curridabat, San José, which would have been recorded in a video that circulated on social networks.

After learning of the video, the Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ) conducted interviews in 2020 that allowed it to obtain information about the suspect, in addition to testimonials from people who helped the cat.

Since none of the residents in the apartments claimed the animal, the people decided to bury it in one of the paths that surround the complex.

‘People should think two, three, four or more times before mistreating an animal, because they can go to prison’

How to report animal abuse? There are telephone, face-to-face and virtual channels; the call can be anonymous

Investigators reconstructed the crash site and they extracted the carcass of the animal to obtain evidence for the case, as reported by the OIJ in August 2020.

The investigation determined that the feline was thrown from a height of about 28 meters and, after falling into a bush, got up out of survival instinct and walked about 30 meters before dying. (I)
