The G20 leaders’ summit, scheduled for the end of October in Rome, will discuss climate change shortly before the crucial Glasgow COP26 conference, which aims to take historic measures on the climate, Italian Head of Government Mario Draghi said.
On the occasion of the G20 in Rome, the main world economic powers will meet on October 30 and 31 to “address some of the negotiations that will be discussed successively at COP26 in Glasgow,” said Draghi, in charge of the rotating presidency of the G20. .
“Without the participation of the world’s largest economies, it will not be possible to respect the Paris agreements, or limit global warming to 1.5 degrees,” he warned.
That threshold corresponds to the more ambitious target set by the Paris agreement in 2015 to limit global warming compared to the pre-industrial era, which the British presidency of COP26, scheduled in Glasgow in November, hopes to keep “alive”.
According to many scientists, that goal is already unattainable.
“The G20 countries produce three-quarters of global emissions. The climate crisis can only be managed if the main global actors decide to act incisively, coordinated and simultaneously, ”Draghi stressed.
US President Joe Biden and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi are expected to attend the meeting in Rome, although Chinese Presidents Xi Jinping and Russian Presidents Vladimir Putin announced they will not attend.
In addition to global warming, leaders and representatives of the 20 largest economies will speak of pandemic and post-covid economic reactivation. (I)
