Airlines around the world, including long-haul carrier Emirates, were rushing Wednesday to cancel or change flights to the United States amid a dispute over the deployment of 5G cellular technologies near US airports.
The issue seemed to particularly affect the Boeing 777, a long-haul aircraft used by carriers around the world. Two Japanese companies expressly mentioned the model as being particularly affected by 5G signals when they announced cancellations and changes to their schedules.
The Dubai-based Emirates, a crucial carrier for travel between East and West, announced it would suspend flights to Boston, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Miami, Newark, New Jersey, Orlando, Florida, San Francisco and Seattle. He indicated that he would maintain flights to Los Angeles, New York and Washington.
In its statement, Emirates reported that the cancellation was necessary because of “operational concerns associated with the planned deployment of 5G mobile network services in the United States at some airports.
“We are working closely with aircraft manufacturers and relevant authorities to alleviate operational concerns, and are confident to resume our services to the United States as quickly as possible.”, said the state airline.
The United Arab Emirates managed to install 5G coverage in all airports without incident, like dozens of other countries. But in the United States, the Federal Aviation Administration fears that the 5G frequency could interfere with aviation equipment.
