The rains that flooded Montevideo have subsided, but the flood alert continues in other Uruguayan regions.
Neighborhoods with flooded houses, covered ravines, people with all their clothes and personal objects wet and hundreds of people affected in the Uruguayan capital are part of the balance left by the flood that affected Montevideo on Monday.
with an amount of water equivalent to a month but that fell in a few hours, As reported by local authorities, Montevideo had a complicated start to the week as the rains affected a large part of the territory and left as a consequence several disasters that will take days to recover.
As Daniela Pérez, one of the members of the Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) Uruguay Adelante (UA), told Efe, they are in permanent contact with the leaders of the main affected neighborhoods to learn first-hand information and now they are in charge of collecting donations. .
Although the yellow alert that governs this Wednesday in several areas of the country due to the persistence of rains and storms does not affect the Uruguayan capital, the Uruguayan Institute of Meteorology (Inumet) maintains for Thursday afternoon-night a forecast of “cloudy and covered” with “precipitation and probable storms”.
In a joint work that integrates UA with other organizations such as Techo, Scouts and representatives of the national government through the Coordinating Center for Departmental Emergencies (CECOED) and the Municipality of Montevideo (city government), they try to respond to the people affected .
Hypochlorite, mattresses, clothing or food are just some of the things that are most urgently needed so that those who were overwhelmed by the water can improve their situation.
The Chacarita de los Padres, Bella Italia, Casavalle and Manga neighborhoods, located in the north of Montevideo, are the most affected, mainly due to the number of families that live in those areas., although there are also others that suffered great losses such as Malvín, in the southeast of the capital.
“In the neighborhoods that are close to ravines, the water in some cases reached the roofs. There are other neighborhoods where there was less water, the height of the water dropped relatively quickly but the mud and puddles remained. Afterwards, the ravines are saturated , no matter how much they were cleaning,” said Pérez.
The CECOED is the organization that is supplying cleaning supplies while the Intendancy carries out the task of removing trees, cleaning streets and delivering mattresses to homes, while the NGOs are the ones that collect basic necessities.
“The phones have been ringing off the hook, but it takes a lot. There are many families that are in need of cleaning supplies, buckets, mops, gloves, rags, brooms, a lot of paint will be needed in a later phase”, he pointed out.
The mayor of Montevideo, Carolina Cosse, published this Tuesday on her Twitter account that the commune is working on distributing supplies to “mitigate the effect generated by the climatic event” suffered and that the departmental government has “dozens of teams” working in the territory.

According to estimates, in this first stage it is planned to deliver 1,000 mattresses and 1,000 “cleaning kits” in 19 neighborhoods of the capital.
Likewise, the mayor highlighted the work carried out by municipal officials and thanked “very especially” the unions that made available “human and material resources” to work in coordination with the Intendancy. (I)
