The omicron variant of the coronavirus that causes COVID-19, discovered in early November, is already present in 71.9% of the cases analyzed in the last 30 days by the global network of GISAID laboratories, the weekly epidemiological report of the World Health Organization (WHO).
Of the 405,000 specimens collected, the variant omicron in 291,000 cases, while the delta, which dominated much of the pandemic in 2021, was only present in 28% of the analyzes of the last 30 days (113,000), the report underlined.
Other variants that the WHO designated as “worrying”, such as gamma and alpha, represent less than 0.1% of the samples carried out.
The variant omicron is causing record numbers of infections globally, although this has not been accompanied by an increase in deaths, so in principle it seems associated with less serious forms of COVID-19.
The WHO, however, maintains its warnings and recommendations to avoid contracting the disease, since the exponential increase in infections in most regions has added pressure to health networks, although this time more to primary care centers than to hospitals.
