The European Union calls for the immediate release of Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny after one year of his arrest

“We reiterate our call to the Russian authorities for his immediate and unconditional release without further delay,” the EU high representative said.

The high representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, returned this Monday to urge Russia to immediately release Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny one year after his arrest.

“The European Union has been frank in considering that the prosecution and verdict against Navalni are politically motivated. We reiterate our call to the Russian authorities for his immediate and unconditional release without further delay.Borrell said in a statement.

As he said, that it is necessary to comply with the provisional measure decreed by the European Court of Human Rights regarding the risk of imprisonment for the life of the opponent.

“We regret that the Russian legal system continues to be instrumentalized against Navalni, as he now faces new criminal charges,” he said.

Borrell again condemned “in the strongest possible terms the assassination attempt” against Navalni by Novichok poisoning. “We call on Russia to investigate it in full transparency and without further delay., and to cooperate fully with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW),” he added.

“A concentration camp 100 km from Moscow”, this is the IK-2, the brutal and feared Russian prison in which the opponent Alexei Navalni was imprisoned

The head of community diplomacy also assured that the EU also condemns “the constant disinformation campaign against Navalni and his partners in the Russian state media.”

“We deplore the persecution of members of Navalni’s network, including the arrest of Liliya Chanysheva”, former head of his office in the city of Ufa, whose “immediate and unconditional” release he also requested from the Russian authorities.

Poisoning and arrest

Navalni was transferred to Berlin in August 2020 on a private initiative from a hospital in the Siberian city of Omsk, where he had been admitted after collapsing during a flight that had to make an emergency landing.

The opposition leader received treatment for 32 days at the Charité university clinic in Berlin for poisoning with a nerve agent.

After recovering and leaving the hospital, Navalni continued under medical observation in the German capital and then stayed for a few more months in southern Germany, before communicating in January 2021 his return to Russia, where he was arrested as soon as he landed. (I)
