At least 12 people were killed and several injured in a 5.3-magnitude earthquake that struck western Afghanistan on Monday, a local official said.
People were killed when the roof of their homes collapsed in Qadis, a town in western Badghis province, he told the AFP the local governor, Mohammad Saleh Purdel.
The magnitude of the earthquake was 5.3, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), which initially reported a magnitude of 5.6.
“Also, several people were injured in today’s earthquake,” Purdel said, adding that women and children were among the victims.
