The Union will deduct unpaid fines? Zbigniew Ziobro may have a plan
At the beginning of the year, EU officials were to call on the Polish government to pay EUR 60 million. This is the amount of the penalty imposed by the Court so far. What if Poland still does not pay the receivables? – The sum of penalties with interest will be deducted from one of the upcoming, current payments – says in an interview with “Dziennik Gazeta Prawna” a source from Brussels wishing to remain anonymous.
The journal’s unofficial information also shows that if this scenario is confirmed, the Polish side may react. Zbigniew Ziobro is to start working on a bill that will reduce the Polish contribution to the community budget. “It is supposed to be a form of retaliation against the European Commission,” reports the daily.
“The safety of Poles is the most important”
It is uncertain whether Poland will voluntarily pay the fines for Turów. It is more certain that the government of the CJEU’s decision will not implement and will keep the mine working. – If the European Commission ultimately wants, in a manner inconsistent with the provisions of EU law, to deduct funds from those transferred to the Polish budget, it can of course always do so, while the safety of Poles in terms of energy is the most important for us – he said in last week Piotr Müller, government spokesman.
He also explained that the Turów power plant, powered by coal from the Turów mine, provides electricity for millions and heat for tens of thousands of people.
