The head of diplomacy Canadian, Mélanie Joly, will travel next week to Kiev to support Ukraine and stress the need to “dissuade Russia” of carrying out “aggressive actions” against that country, the Foreign Ministry reported in a statement released this Saturday.
Joly’s visit, which will depart from Ottawa on Sunday until the following weekend and will also travel to Paris and Brussels, aims to “reaffirm Canada’s unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
Their talks will focus on “Russia’s aggression and destabilizing activities in and around Ukraine,” the note said.
The United States and its European allies have charged for weeks that Russia has deployed nearly 100,000 troops to the Ukraine border, and Washington on Friday accused Moscow of trying to create a “pretext” to invade Ukraine.
This “regrouping of Russian troops and equipment” puts “the security of the entire region at risk,” the Canadian government considered.
According to the Canadian foreign minister, “we must dissuade Russia from continuing with these aggressive actions”, for which her country intends to “work with its international partners to defend the international order”.
In Kiev, Joly is due to meet in particular with Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal. He will also visit the approximately 200 Canadian soldiers deployed since 2015 in Ukraine as part of the UNIFIER mission, which aims to contribute to the training of Ukrainian forces.
Since Russia’s annexation of the Crimean peninsula in 2014 and the subsequent conflict between Kiev forces and pro-Russian separatists, Canada, which has a large ethnic Ukrainian community, has imposed sanctions on more than 440 individuals and entities, many in coordination with its allies.
