Argentina extradited to Spain Julián Ovejero, known as the alleged “Grindr killer”, accused of the murder of Najuzatih Zahell Dias, a computer engineer of Puerto Rican origin who was found dead in 2018 in his home in Madrid with more than 40 stab wounds.
As reported to Efe Police sources, Ovejero, 27, arrived this Thursday in Spain from Argentina, his country of origin, and was transferred before the judicial authority.
He is known as the alleged “Grindr killer” because he would have met the victim through that popular gay dating app.
The Argentine justice authorized last October 4 the extradition of Ovejero, who had been a fugitive for just over three years and who was arrested in September 2021 by the Interpol division of the Argentine Federal Police in the province of Tucumán (north).
Despite the fact that the accused had requested to be tried in the South American country, the judge of Tucumán Fernando Poviña considered that Spain’s request met the requirements established in the cooperation treaty that both countries have.
The body of the computer engineer Najuzatih Dias was found on February 24, 2018 by a friend who came to his home, in a southern neighborhood of Madrid.
According to Spanish investigators, the 35-year-old Puerto Rican had been murdered in his bed after having had sexual intercourse; his body had between 40 and 50 stab wounds.
After analyzing the victim’s mobile devices and the building’s security cameras, the Police found the face of a man who would respond to the facial characteristics of the only accused, Julián Ovejero.
In addition, he was listed as a contact on Najuzatih’s social networks, and investigators found DNA of the possible murderer at the crime scene.
However, the suspect had fled the day after the alleged attack on La Bombilla, a town in his native country in the province of Tucumán (Argentina).
After conducting an exhaustive monitoring of the activities he carried out on social networks, the Argentine Police arrested the alleged murderer in a cafeteria in the area. (I)
