Mexican billionaire Ricardo Salinas Pliego said he is considering acquiring Citibanamex, Citigroup’s consumer banking business in the Latin American nation, after the US banking giant said it will withdraw from the country.
Salinas, ranked as the third-richest man in Mexico with a family fortune estimated at more than $ 15 billion by Forbes, is the owner of the large banking business Banco Azteca.
The businessman said Tuesday night on his Twitter account that he has asked his team to analyze the advisability of “acquiring Citibanamex.”
Citigroup announced Tuesday that it will exit its Citibanamex consumer banking business in Mexico, ending its 20-year retail presence in the country, which was the last of its consumer businesses abroad.
The world’s largest financial services company based in New York said it intends to focus its consumer banking business on global wealth, as well as payments and loans and a specific retail presence in the United States.
In addition, the US giant assured that it will continue to operate its banking business with a local license in Mexico through global institutional clients and that the exit does not include Citigroup’s institutional business in the country.
