Diplomats from the United States and Russia meet in Geneva on Monday for the first in a series of talks to break the deadlock on Ukraine
The recent tension on the Ukraine-Russia border is nothing new. Since 2014, the Donbas region, in eastern Ukraine, has been immersed in a harsh conflict that has already left more than 14,000 fatalities.
The annexation of Crimea by Russia on March 18 of that year unleashed a series of movements that have made this war in Ukraine an international conflict.
Diplomats from The United States and Russia meet in Geneva on Monday for the first in a series of talks aimed at breaking the deadlock on Ukraine., as part of the bilateral strategic dialogue mechanism created in 2021.
The delegations are led by the US Undersecretary of State, Wendy Sherman, and the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Riabkov, who held a first meeting in the Swiss city on Sunday.
After the meeting, a working dinner, Riabkov said that the talks are likely to be difficult.
NATO and the European Union see in this former Soviet republic a potential ally, while the Kremlin fears that Kiev will move further away from Moscow.
