Delays and costs, great challenges for British manufacturers due to Brexit

Customs delays, bureaucracy and high costs are among the main challenges that British manufacturers will face in 2022 due to Brexit, according to a survey carried out by MakeUK, the body that represents 20,000 national firms, reveals this Monday.

That survey also sees an increase in optimism among companies of all sizes in the country, although that optimism is undermined by the downstream effects that the UK’s exit from the European Union (EU) is having.

Two-thirds of industrial company leaders from 228 firms surveyed indicated that Brexit had “moderately or significantly” damaged their businesses one year after the transition period ended.

More than half of the companies warned that they will probably suffer more damage during 2022 due to delays at customs due to controls on imports and due to changes in the labeling of products.

Brexit disruptions continue to be among the biggest concerns facing industry leaders this year.

They specify among those concerns customs delays, additional costs derived from complying with separate regulatory regimes in the United Kingdom and the European Union (EU), and reduced access to migrant workers.

MakeUK notes that it is clear that “Brexit and the global COVID19 pandemic have had an imprint on the mindset of many businesses, which are traumatized by continued delays and disruptions to their supply chains.”

However, despite these concerns over Brexit and the omicron variant, MakeUK notes that three-quarters of participating companies expect conditions to improve this year.

Specifically, 73% of these groups believe that the conditions in the sector will improve, and that the opportunities outweigh the risks.
