The shift to remote work for high-paying jobs will accelerate this year, according to a new report, challenging authorities who are desperate to bring workers back and jumpstart their economies.
More than a quarter of all professional positions in North America, largely concentrated in the United States, will be remote by the end of this year, compared with 18% at the end of 2021, according to Ladders Inc., a job site that they pay at least $ 100,000. This means that more than 20 million jobs will not return to the office after the pandemic, Ladders said.
Return-to-office plans have been delayed in cities across the country due to the omicron variant, and some employees have been working from home since the pandemic began in the United States in March 2020. The Mayor of Nueva City York, Eric Adams, and Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser have pleaded with workers to return, but employers in both cities are telling their staff to stay home.
“This life shift towards remote working is progressing even faster than anyone thought,” Ladders Inc. CEO Marc Cenedella said in the report. Those who predict that the workers will return to the offices are “deluding themselves,” he said.
Remote job opportunities are growing especially in fields that emphasize technical and organizational skills, Ladders said. They tend to hold positions of engineers and project and product managers.
A report released Tuesday showed a record 4.5 million Americans quit their jobs in November, highlighting the persistent turnover in the job market. Resignations have been on the rise as employers offer perks like higher wages and flexible work arrangements to attract new talent.
Since the start of the pandemic, Ladders has been tracking telecommuting data for the 50,000 largest companies in North America, and not just those with ads on their site. Before COVID, only 4% of six-figure paid jobs were available remotely, the company notes in its quarterly report.
