Ómicron: two million daily cases of COVID-19 in the world

More than two million daily cases of COVID-19 were registered on average in the world during the week of January 1 to 7, a figure that doubled in ten days, according to an AFP count.

In the last seven days, an average of 2’106,118 daily cases were registered. The threshold of one million daily cases was exceeded in the week of December 23-29, 2021. The number of new daily cases increased 270% since the discovery of the omicron variant in Botswana and South Africa, at the end of November 2021.

The vast majority of new cases are currently detected in Europe (7′211,290 cases in seven days, + 47% compared to the previous week) and in the United States / Canada (4′808,098 cases, + 76%). These two regions represent respectively 49% and 33% of the cases recorded in the world in one week.

COVID-19 is strongly accelerating in almost all continents: in Oceania (369,313 cases in seven days, + 224%), in Latin America / Caribbean (1′126,862 cases, + 148%), in the Middle East (209,021 cases in seven days, + 116%) and in Asia (714,017 cases, + 145%). Only Africa currently registers balanced figures (304,224 cases in seven days).

Contamination is, as in Europe and in the United States / Canada, at the highest point since the beginning of the pandemic. However, the current wave of infections is not accompanied by an increase in deaths. In the last seven days, an average of 6,237 deaths per day was registered in the world, the lowest rate since the end of October 2020, that is, almost 15 months ago.

Recently, up to 8,049 daily deaths were recorded between November 29 and December 5, just after the discovery of the omicron variant.

These figures are based on daily reports from the health authorities in each country. A significant portion of less severe or asymptomatic cases remain undetected despite intensified testing in many countries since the onset of the pandemic, following the discovery of the coronavirus in late 2019. Additionally, screening policies differ from one country to another.
