UK deploys Army to London hospitals to tackle omicron variant

Some have started work this Friday and are expected to continue deployed until the end of January.

UK health authorities have confirmed that The Army has deployed troops in the capital, London, to help hospitals cope with the advance of the omicron variant of the coronavirus, from which numerous health workers have been infected.

In total, some 200 Army personnel, of which 40 are doctors who will help the health workers to cope with the situation in the city’s hospitals. The others will be in charge of income, supplies and other types of bureaucratic issues, as reported by the Defense Ministry in a statement.

Some of them have started working this Friday and it is expected that they will continue to be deployed until the end of january. The announcement comes two days after the prime minister, Boris Johnson, expressed that he hopes that the United Kingdom “comes out” of the current wave of infections without the need to apply more restrictions.

However, he has admitted that health is “temporarily exceeded” due to the appearance of the new variant. On Thursday, the UK reported 179,756 cases. The figures show that in the last week the country has verified more than a million infections, 29% more than the previous week. In the England region, 17,988 people were hospitalized, 15,659 more than the day before.
