Israel to release Palestinian prisoner after 141 days on hunger strike

Palestinian prisoner Hisham Abu Hawash had been in administrative detention by Israel since October 2020. After 141 days on hunger strike, Israel will not extend his detention any longer; They will release him on February 26th.

The Palestinian prisoner Hisham Abu Hawash yesterday stopped the hunger strike that began ago 141 days in protest of the administrative detention imposed by Israel. Last December he entered critical condition. Abu Hawash was transferred to a hospital, although the arrest was still in force. However, Israel decided yesterday to release the Palestinian prisoner next 26 of February.

The Israeli policy of administrative detention, widely condemned by the international community, allows the arrest of Palestinians without charges or trial for renewable periods, ranging from three to six months, based on undisclosed evidence that not even a detainee’s attorney can review.

Abu Hawash was arrested on October 27, 2020 without charge or trial. He received three consecutive administrative detention orders, each for six months. Finally, his lawyer, Jawad Boulos, has communicated that Israel has decided not to extend his detention beyond February.

Freedom of some prisoners

Palestinian detainees have continuously resorted to indefinite hunger strikes as a way to protest their illegal administrative detention and to demand an end to this policy which is in violation of international law. Since the beginning of 2021, more than 60 prisoners they have gone on a hunger strike in protest against this type of detention. Thus, some prisoners have been released.

Today, Israel supports more than 500 Palestinians in administrative detention. In all, there are 4,600 Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails.
